Can Facebook keep its cool urban culture if it moves to Sun?s old headquarters?

Facebook has made moves toward buying the former campus of Sun Microsystems in Menlo Park, Calif. If it moves from its downtown Palo Alto location, where it’s bursting at the seams, to the distinctly corporate location of the former tech giant, it may be tough for the company to keep its hip geek culture.

Like Google before it, Facebook is growing fast and it is outgrowing the multi-building campus it occupies within walking distance of Stanford University in Palo Alto. The company quietly bought 22 acres of business property near the former Sun campus, purchasing buildings at 312 and 314 Constitution drive, according to Palo Alto Online. Balancing growth and preserving corporate culture is a big issue for Facebook. It has to become bigger to stay ahead of rivals such as Google and MySpace. But it also has to be perceived as a cool place to work to attract the best talent.

As Facebook moves from 1,400 employees to a much larger number, the company will have to be careful. Until now, it has preserved a geek culture fostered by founder Mark Zuckerberg, the 26-year-old chief executive of the company. Zuckerberg engages in some very hacker-like practices, such as working on an open table in a big room full of engineers and banging a gong whenever someone finishes a big coding project (pictured at top, with Zuckerberg holding the gong).

Facebook’s current headquarters now is a combination of functional and eclectic. In the back of its main building, the company has a big lawn where it hosts a lot of hot dog and hamburger outings. Sun Microsystems’ former campus in Menlo Park is huge, with a bunch of office buildings that surround a central open space. It’s nicer than a lot of cramped office locations in Silicon Valley, but it also has that distinguished corporate feel.

But Facebook may go the way of other big tech companies such as Google and Apple. Those companies have tried to hang on to their culture as well, but at some point, even they lose their luster and employees move on to other companies. Zuckerberg and Facebook’s executives will have to manage this transition properly. Google, Facebook, Microsoft and others have done so by dressing up their new corporate campuses in a way that makes them feel anti-corporate. Pixar, for instance, has a huge common area in the middle of its campus, with lots of glass offices looking down on the open space. If Facebook buys the Menlo Park campus of Sun and remodels it, I vote for Facebook to do something like the Pixar scene pictured below.

Palo Alto Online said the Constitution drive properties were purchased by Giant Properties LLC, which uses a Facebook address for its location. The Menlo Park community development staff is also “finalizing land use entitlements for a new tenant at Sun campus,” according to papers filed by the city staff. The value of Facebook’s assessed buisness property value has risen from $8 million in 2007 to $63.4 million in 2010. Facebook has declined comment on the move.

Egypt?s internet shutdown sparks a communications battle

Freedom of expression and internet access go hand in hand. By shutting down the internet, the Egyptian government has sparked a wider battle about communications, technology, and free speech that goes beyond issues of concern among the country’s protesters.

It’s become clear that the Egyptian situation is leading to a larger conflict over communications and censorship. And lots of companies are going to get caught in the middle and will have to sort out what they’re going to do when governments approach them with orders to shut down internet access.

Renesys, an internet intelligence authority, confirmed the shutdown and called it “unprecedented in internet history.” In cracking down on social media such as Twitter, it threw the baby out with the bath water, shutting down access for businesses, banks, internet cafes, web sites, schools, embassies and government offices, all of which relied on four major Egyptian internet service providers — Link Egypt, Vodafone/Raya, Telecom Egypt, and Etisalat Misr.

Renesys said the shutdown took place at 12:34 am Egyptian time on Thursday and resulted in all routes to the internet from Egypt going down. By contrast, a few specific routes were blocked in Tunisia when that country went through its recent revolution. In Iran’s protests last year, the government made internet access painfully slow.

Renesys said the move essentially disconnected 80 million peope from the internet. By Friday morning, one service provider, Noor Group, was unaffected by the takedown order. The group is host to the Egyptian Stock Exchange, leading to speculation that it is needed to keep commerce moving in the country.

Meanwhile, Twitter issued its own manifesto in favor of freedom of expression on Friday. Saying “the tweets must flow,” the company’s official blog said that its position on freedom of expression “carries with it a mandate to protect our users’ right to speak freely and preserve their ability to contest having their private information revealed.” The company said it does remove some tweets for legal reasons and will sometimes turn information over to authorities when required by law. But it will give Twitter users a chance to make their case if they so choose. The company will also encourage more transparency in its process.

In another twist, the Al Jazeera News Service released photographs of the Egyptian uprising via Flickr and made video available under a Creative Commons license. The photographs and videos available are free to use so long as the user gives attribution and does not alter the products. In doing so, Al Jazeera will more easily be able to spread its content far and wide and make sure that its own assets are available even if its web sites are shut down. (Palestinian protesters trashed the offices of Al Jazeera in Ramallah after the service leaked details of Palestinian negotiators’ positions and the concessions they were willing to make to Israelis).

The Center for Democracy and Technology, a nonprofit public interest group in Washington, D.C., condemned the Egyptian government’s move. The group suggested that technology companies have robust policies in place to deal with such government demands ahead of time so that they can be in a position to resist demands inconsistent with the rule of law and respect for human rights.

“This action is inconsistent with all international human rights norms, and is unprecedented in internet history,” said CDT President Leslie Harris. “Egypt’s actions will only fuel unrest and make peaceful resolution of grievances far more difficult.”

Mark Zuckerberg meets The Social Network?s Jesse Eisenberg on Saturday Night Live

Tonight, on Saturday Night Live, Jesse Eisenberg did the opening monologue. It’s ironic that he played a big role in trashing Mark Zuckerberg’s reputation — through his role in The Social Network movie about the finding of Facebook — and now Eisenberg is part of an effort that makes Zuckerberg more likable. That’s pretty important, considering that Facebook might one day depend on the public’s support if and when the company goes public.

As the star of Best-Picture-nominated The Social Network movie, Eisenberg played a very dark and sinister Zuckerberg in the fictionalized account of the founding of Facebook. During the Saturday Night Live routine, he was interrupted by comedian Andy Samberg, who trotted out in a Zuckerberg-style hoodie. Samberg said that he felt bad because Eisenberg got nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor and added, “What did I get?” Eisenberg said, “Well, wasn’t Facebook just valued at $50 billion?” Samberg booms, “All hail the Zuck.”

The actors have done a decent job mimicking Zuckerberg’s clothing and some of his mannerisms. But it was much more entertaining to see the real Zuck, as a kind of caricature of himself, show them how they should really do the scene. The camera cut to Zuckerberg himself saying that he wanted to go out there because “those guys are nerds” and that he’s fun because he invented “poking.” The pair talked about how they play Zuckerberg. Then Zuckerberg joined the duo on stage.

Samberg said it was “Awkberg,” (suggesting it was awkward that Eisenberg and Zuckerberg had never met before). Eisenberg said he liked Zuckerberg’s interview on 60 Minutes. Eisenberg asked him if he had seen the movie and Zuckerberg said yes. He said it was “interesting,” and Eisenberg said, “I’ll take that.” They then introduced the next gig and high-fived each other.

It wasn’t much of a comedy routine. In fact, Zuckerberg has been funnier on 60 Minutes, when he said that the filmmakers got the T-shirts right that Eisenberg’s character wears. “I think I own every one of those T-shirts,” he said. Zuckerberg was actually far more poised than Eisenberg, who seemed, or at least was acting, like a nervous wreck. The whole thing looked very much rehearsed.

Zuckeberg, Sean Parker, and others have laughed off the movie for making their lives far sexier than the reality was. But Zuckerberg’s current attitude toward the film, which has won a lot of accolades, is probably a good one. Zuckerberg fares best in the press when he shows a sense of humor about his nerdy self and tries to be charming in a self-deprecating way. I suppose there is a business reason for this on Zuckerberg’s part. If the public views him as likable, that could carry over to a favorable view of Facebook as a brand. And if Zuckerberg is likable, then Facebook may have an easier time getting more users and going public. Perhaps we are over-thinking a simple guest appearance on a TV show. But Zuckerberg can easily afford the best public relations advice and you have to believe his handlers are thinking about these things.

?The tweets must flow!? says Twitter amidst Egyptian unrest

Microblogging service Twitter is taking on the recent decision by Egyptian authorities to shut off access to the Internet amidst massive unrest in the country, saying that no matter how threatening online organization may seem, the “tweets must flow.”

Egypt shut down all routes to the Internet at 12:34 am Egyptian time on Thursday, according to Renesys, an internet intelligence authority.

Twitter cofounder Biz Stone (pictured) and company lawyer Alexander Macgillivray responded to the move with a blog post Friday, in which they noted Twitter’s importance as a channel for political discourse and change.

Here’s an excerpt from that blog post:

Our goal is to instantly connect people everywhere to what is most meaningful to them. For this to happen, freedom of expression is essential. Some Tweets may facilitate positive change in a repressed country, some make us laugh, some make us think, some downright anger a vast majority of users. We don’t always agree with the things people choose to tweet, but we keep the information flowing irrespective of any view we may have about the content.

The open exchange of information can have a positive global impact. This is both a practical and ethical belief. On a practical level, we simply cannot review all one hundred million-plus Tweets created and subsequently delivered every day. From an ethical perspective, almost every country in the world agrees that freedom of expression is a human right.

The use of Twitter as an agent for political and social change will only increase in upcoming years as the service continues to reach more people in real-time, cofounder Evan Williams predicted in October at a public debate.

?It?s always been our goal to reach the ?weakest signals? all over the world, such as the recent usage in Iran and Moldova,? when those countries were undergoing violent unrest and saw little local media coverage of protests, Williams said at the time.

Salesforce?s enterprise-style Facebook Chatter.com goes live Monday

Chatter.com, customer relationship management software provider Salesforce’s enterprise-style social network, is going live on Monday and the company is sparing no expense to try to capture a market that has mostly jumped on board with other collaboration startups like Yammer and Box.net.

Chatter.com is basically a stripped down version of Chatter in Salesforce’s customer relationship management (CRM) service. The site is pegged as a Facebook-style social network for businesses that makes it easier for employees to communicate and share files amongst themselves. Like Yammer and other collaboration services, the site allows users to upload and share files, comment on them and view up-to-date activity streams.

Users enter their work email address into a sign-up box on Chatter.com and get going from there ? just like Yammer. They can set up a profile, complete with all the bells and whistles Facebook has.Chatter.com was officially announced at Dreamforce in December, but details were pretty sparse.

While Salesforce doesn’t want there to be a limit on how many files users can upload, there is a theoretical limit that free Chatter.com users can reach, said Kraig Swensrud, senior vice president of product marketing at Salesforce. So it’s similar to other sites that use a freemium model to attract new users ? Salesforce just isn’t being explicit in what the limit is.

“We don’t want to be in the business of charging for storage, we want everyone to use the cloud for storage,” Swensrud said. “It’s a more efficient model, it’s been proven on the web by Dropbox and Gmail.”

Users can preview files on the website without having to own the software to view it and edit it on their computers. That includes software like Microsoft Word, Adobe Illustrator and others. The free version on Chatter.com won’t sync up with Salesforce’s CRM software ? which the company hopes will be enough of a hook to bring in new customers.

“Photo-sharing was the killer app for Facebook,” Swensrud said. “We think file-sharing will the killer app for these enterprise-class Facebook networks like Chatter.”

Most major players in the collaboration space have already focused on providing efficient file-sharing tools. Box.net, for example, is a pure enterprise-style Dropbox with some additional micro-blogging features duct taped on top. Yammer also has file-sharing features, as does Huddle. The primary play here is to try to snag new customers for Salesforce’s main CRM software ? the market for Chatter has around 65 million businesses, Swensrud said.

To compete initially with Yammer and make a splash in the collaboration space, the company launched Chatter, a micro-blogging service. The service quickly picked up around 60,000 customers, and its biggest customer, Dell, has around 100,000 active users. The rest of its paying clients have around 5,000 active users, according to a presentation at today?s conference. Salesforce thenturned the service loose on the freemium revenue model in order to compete with other collaboration startups (it cost non-Salesforce users $15 per user per month beforehand.)

Chatter.com users will also be able to dive into the mobile applications on the iPad, iPhone and BlackBerry without having to pay for the official Chatter service. Like Chatter.com, mobile free Chatter users will just get access to a stripped down version of the main Chatter service that isn’t connected to Salesforce’s CRM software. Swensrud was still mum as to when Chatter would appear on devices running Google’s Android mobile operating system ? though the application was announced at Dreamforce last year.

To attract those new customers, Salesforce is running Chatter advertisements just before and after the Black-Eyed Peas perform at this year’s Super Bowl half-time show. It’s a pretty decent chunk of change on advertising ? advertisements run during the Super Bowl typically cost close to $3 million per spot. The advertisement features the Black-Eyed Peas and front-man Will.i.am ? who has actually been quite active in the Silicon Valley scene and recently joined Intel as director of creative innovation.

How 5 Big Companies Are Marking Data Privacy Day

Today is global Data Privacy Day and companies all around the world are marking it in different ways. Below we've highlighted some of the activities of Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Opera and IBM.

Those actions range from implementing new technologies through making blog posts highlighting existing policies. Do you feel like these companies are responsive to your concerns about data privacy in 2011?

Sponsor

Microsoft put up a blog post highlighting its strong security measures baked into Hotmail and Windows Live. That's nice.

European mobile mega-browser company Opera posted the results of an interesting survey it commissioned regarding digital privacy concerns around the world. One highlight:

Worried about who is watching you online? Some 38% of Russian respondents were most concerned about social-networking websites having too much insight into their online behavior, far ahead of 15% in the United States and 10% in Japan, where social media ranked number 2. U.S. participants were most concerned about the government (35%). Japan held least trust in shopping sites (33%), while only 5% and 6% respectively in Russia and United States shared the same anxiety. Between 13 and 19% of respondents in each country were not worried about anyone gaining insight into their online activities.

Facebook implemented HTTPS secure connections so that users don't get hijacked by Firesheep and other such programs. The company also faced widespread criticism on privacy, again, now for this week's move to allow advertisers to sponsor particular status updates from users.

Google is hosting a public hearing in Washington DC called "The Technology of Privacy: When Geeks Meet Wonks." A video of that hearing will be posted on the Google Privacy channel on YouTube. Alma Whitten, Google's Director of Privacy, Product and Engineering, is clearly committed to balancing peoples' privacy interests with the interests in innovation held by Google and its users.

My favorite big company move is probably IBM's running of a column on the topic on its Smarter Planet blog. Harriet Pearson, VP Security Counsel & Chief Privacy Officer at IBM, focuses on the Internet of Things and the importance of securing trust through privacy in order to build sustainable technology that can change the world.

What's at stake? Plenty. Getting data privacy "right" is an economic and social imperative. Trust and confidence in the security and privacy of the critical systems of our planet - especially the digital version of its central nervous system, the Internet - is foundational to individuals' continued engagement and reliance on such things as online commerce, e-health and smart grids. If individual consumers don't feel that their privacy and security are protected, they will not support modernization efforts, even though the capabilities of technology advancements are proven and the potential benefits to society are extensive.

What's at the forefront of your mind about digital privacy, here on this Digital Privacy Day?

Disclosure: IBM is also a ReadWriteWeb sponsor.

RentPost aims to simplify rent for landlords and tenants

Newly launched rental-property startup RentPost has a simple goal: to bring the aging and overly complex category of property management software into the modern era of web apps.

RentPost helps landlords keep track of their properties, including rent collection and work orders, all in a slick online interface. And for tenants, it offers a way to pay rent online as well as a way to stay in touch with their landlords.

Basically, it?s rent management the way we?ve always wanted it to be.

Rentpost?s online payment system is secure and hooks directly into landlord and tenant bank accounts. Landlords also have the option of accepting rent by credit card, as well as manually by check. The service handles the accounting end of all transactions and can spit out reports as you need them. Tenants can also set up automatic rent payment, and landlords can automatically add late fees and other charges.

Pricing for landlords starts at $9 a month for 15 rental units and goes up to $69 for unlimited units ($249 if they need custom branding). Rentpost charges a one-time online rent collection fee of $25, and tenants are charged a mere $1 for every payment.

The Athens, Georgia-based company will likely find success in other college towns where young renters are used to paying for everything online. Personally, the only reason I ever write checks is for rent, and I?m sure I?m not the only one. For me, PayPal and online bank transfers have mostly erased the need to rely on checks for other purposes.

Co-founder and CEO Jacob Thomason tells VentureBeat that the company is focused mostly on delivering the best user experience possible. Property management software offerings have been around for some time, but they’re generally clunky and difficult to use. Some even require training for landlords to take advantage of them. That?s not the case with RentPost, which is designed similar to social networks that many users are already familiar with.

Rentpost has four employees, who spent two years working on it, and is entirely bootstrapped. Check out a video demonstration of the service below.

Are you planning to hire new staff in 2011? After two years of slashing staffs to the bone, many small businesses may feel it?s finally time to staff up so they can take advantage of the recovery.

But do you know where to find those workers?

Do You Need to Hire This Year?

Microsoft?s Kinectified game business grows 55 percent ? fastest-selling consumer electronics device in history

Call it Kinectification. Microsoft said today that its video game business grew dramatically thanks to sales of its Kinect motion-sensing system.

The Entertainment & Devices division — which includes Xbox 360 and PC games, Zune, Windows Phone 7, and consumer software — generated $3.7 billion in revenue in the quarter ended Dec. 31, up 55 percent from $2.4 billion a year earlier.

Peter Klein, chief financial officer, said in a conference call that Kinect is the “fastest-selling consumer electronics device in history.”

That shows that, after many years of skepticism and losses, Microsoft’s game business has hit its stride. Kinect has given the company a much-needed boost in sales at a time when Microsoft might normally have had to introduce a new game console. The Xbox 360 was introduced in 2005. If it were a normal console cycle, Microsoft would have to introduce a new box this year. But Kinect let the company postpone the new console and keep gamers entertained with something new.

Operating income for the Entertainment & Devices division was $679 million, up from $365 million a year ago. Microsoft saw 42 percent growth in U.S. console sales in 2010, mainly because it introduced a slimmed-down version of the Xbox 360 in June. Kinect also drove new game software and console sales as well.

Microsoft sold 6.3 million XBox 360 consoles during the holiday season, up 21 percent from a year ago. The company sold 8 millon Kinect sensors in the first 60 days after launch. Memberships of its premium XBox Live online service grew 30 percent to above 30 million active members in the second quarter of its 2011 fiscal year, according to the company. Microsoft is expecting 50 percent growth in its entertainment division in the third quarter, and 40 percent overall for its 2011 fiscal year.

Microsoft said Windows Phone 7 is available on 9 smartphones launched by 60 operators in 30 markets.

Small Business News: Taxing Our Small Businesses

Taxing small business is an important issue, especially in tough economic times. Small businesses hold the key to economic recovery so lower taxes for everyone would only speed the return to economic prosperity. As many small businesses know, lower taxes not only on business but on consumers would increase customer spending and benefit our businesses far more than increases in small business lending. It’s time we understand that lower taxes mean better business and a better economy for everyone.

Kongregate takes another crack at launching online arcade on Android

It’s round two in the Google versus Kongregate mobile arcade match ?and hopefully there will be less drama this time around.

Flash game portal Kongregate has released a new version of its mobile arcade application on the Android Marketplace after its first application was abruptly pulled in a very characteristically Apple move for violating the terms of service.

The latest version of the application explicitly uses the web browser to run each game ? the application basically launches an instance of the webkit browser and shows an address and progress bar. The games that are downloaded are only stored in the cache of the web browser instead of on the phone. So the game is technically not downloaded directly to the phone ? a sore point that caused Google to pull the application from the marketplace.

The initial version of Kongregate downloaded the flash games onto the phone’s cache and it wasn’t immediately apparent that the game was played in a web browser (though that’s how the application actually worked.) That prompted Google to abruptly pull the application from the Android Marketplace for violating its terms of service ? specifically the non-compete clause. Google gave Kongregate a good bit of feedback about why the application was pulled, but communication dropped off after that after the search giant made it clear it wasn’t willing to budge and re-instate the application.

While the Android Marketplace has traditionally been a more open development launchpad for App makers, Google’s slap at Kongregate seems characteristic of Apple’s more closed operating environment. Google wasn’t in contact with Kongregate for nearly a full day after the site tried to first appeal the app’s removal and wouldn’t give specific reasons why the application violated the terms of service, despite the highly technical nature of the infraction, said Kongregate CEO Jim Greer.

“We told them that (the games ran in a browser), and they circled back up internally and said that despite the fact it was in a browser they felt it was still over the line,” he said. “It’s their terms of service, so there wasn’t much point in continuing to argue with that.”

Sounds awfully like a line we’ve heard on another app store, doesn’t it?

Google basically said the application behaved like an app store within the app store by downloading games onto the phone’s cache, which would potentially pull revenue away from Google’s marketplace. For example, Kongregate could sell each game individually as an app, just not serve as a place to download them. The original Kongregate application that downloaded games to the phone’s cache is still available on Kongregate’s website, but the site might pull it down if that’s what it takes to keep an application on the Android Marketplace, Greer said.

The initial Kongregate application had around 30,000 downloads and had a 4.61 out of 5 rating on the Android Marketplace before Google pulled the app. Since then, Kongregate has been trying to work with Google to appeal the application but eventually gave up and redesigned the app to Google’s liking. After around five days of programming the team was able to turn it around and launch the new one, which is currently live on the Android Marketplace.

VentureBeat has contacted Google for more details about the launch and the fate of Kongregate’s latest version. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
