Quotebook: An iOS App for All You Quotation Mavens

quotebook150x150.png

Are you one of those people that has spent the past decade walking through life looking for opportunities to squeeze yet another Big Lebowsky quote into a conversation? Or perhaps you feel that the best way to express your thoughts is not with your own words, but the properly woven poesy of Wordsworth?

If you're a quotation maven of the nth degree, then Quotebook could be your new favorite friend for the iPhone.

Sponsor

quotebook.png

Quotebook calls itself "an iOS app for collecting and sharing the quotes that matter to you." I might call it the favorite new tool of all you RenFaire loving, Simpsons obsessing, Shakespeare memorizing, D&D playing, literary quotation hounds out there.

So what does it do? Quotebook lets you quickly excerpt quotes from things you read and catalog them in a personal database, offering quick sharing options to Twitter, Facebook, Email, SMS and Tumblr. If you're reading something on your iPhone, you can select the text and the app will detect it in your clipboard upon opening. If you're not entirely sure about the quote, you can even look up Authors on Wikipedia and WikiQuote, where you can browse for other quotes.

Once you post a quote, you can tag it according to author, topic, and even give it a rating - all of which can later be searched. At the bottom of the main screen, you can navigate your quotes by either the quote itself, the author, source or tag. And if you want to hang on to these quotes (and who wouldn't?) you can export, backup and email your quotes directly from within the app.

MIT researcher shows how to measure emotions with technology (video)

Measuring emotions isn’t as hard as it sounds.

Researchers have shown they can use technologies to measure your emotional state of mind for market research, educational, and medical purposes. The technology could ultimately become part of a larger set of tracking tools that will help companies tailor products and services more precisely to people they’re targeting.

Rosalind Picard, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Affective Computing Research Group, gave a speech at the Web 2.0 Expo show in San Francisco yesterday where she spelled out how it is possible to capture someone’s vital stats in real time to decipher his or her emotional state.

Picard and her researchers have figured out a number of ways to measure emotions, including putting palm sensors on volunteer subjects. The data can be put on a graph which can show off their emotional peaks and valleys; the researchers can get an exact match for the peaks and valleys by looking at a video that is synchronized with the graph.

Picard, who is also chief scientist and chairman of Affectiva, a startup that works with market researchers to measure consumer reactions, said the research is meant to help discern the emotions of people who can’t communicate them well, such as people with autism or language disabilities.

Picard showed video of a girl with a sensor that measures her skin conductivity, which records sweat levels and can be correlated to stress. The video shows that the girl’s stress levels go up when she gets on a swing and then subsides the more she gently rocks on the swing.

Sensors can give warnings about babies who are about to cry as well (although you have to make sure that the baby doesn’t eat the sensor).

Picard also showed a girl during a recital day at elementary school. The stress of performing a recital is clearly visible on a graph measuring the girl’s emotions. She relaxes for a while, but her stress level goes up when the girl suffers a bullying experience from another student.

Picard also showed how market researchers can make use of the technology by gauging the emotional reaction of an audience for a commercial or a movie. Of course, there’s lots of privacy concerns here so the technology has to be used with the consent of the user.

A webcam can also show how much somebody smiles while watching something. This link lets you analyze your smile as you watch a commercial in front of a webcam.

New York Times launches digital subscriptions: Are e-readers an afterthought?

After announcing its new digital subscription plan a couple of weeks ago and launching the plan in Canada, The New York Times is now expanding its paywall to readers everywhere. The strategy is very device focused (you have to purchase a mobile or tablet app; you can?t buy website access on its own), but there?s one class of device that?s curiously absent — e-readers like Amazon.com?s Kindle and Barnes & Noble?s Nook.

The only mention of e-readers on The Times? new digital subscription page is in a footnote pointing out that they are not included in the new plans. However, you can already buy subscriptions to The Times on the Kindle and the Nook for $19.99 per month. And Amazon announced today that Kindle subscribers will get free access to NYTimes.com on their computers, just like the new mobile and tablet subscribers.

So why were e-readers reduced to a footnote in The Times? digital efforts? I suspect it?s because monetization on the Kindle and Nook were already working just fine, so Times executives focused their efforts on finding new strategies. Now, almost as an afterthought, The Times is returning its attention to the paying readers it already has, so Kindle subscribers are getting website access just like print subscribers. (There?s no official word on whether Nook subscribers will get the same privileges, although I?d be pretty surprised if they don?t.)

In his write-up of the Kindle news, Wired?s John C. Abell expressed reservations about ?the commoditization of the [Times'] website.? I don?t know if that?s a valid complaint about Kindle subscribers — who are paying customers, after all — but there are still questions about whether The Times? paywall lets too many readers in. As The Times has already announced (confusingly), readers get 20 free articles per month, but links from social networks and other sites will always work, even if you?ve passed your quota.

I suppose the porousness of its paywall is why The Times is emphasizing the device subscriptions, rather than access to the website. It’s much easier to say “you’re paying for an iPhone app!” than “you’re paying for access to a website that you can read for free, sometimes.”

Warner Bros Adds 5 More Movie Titles to Facebook Rentals, But Is It a Threat to Netflix?

inception150.jpgEarlier this month, Warner Bros announced that it would become the first Hollywood studio to make its movies available for sale or rental via Facebook. Its first offering: The Dark Knight. Now Warner Bros has added five more blockbuster titles to its Facebook rental catalog: Inception, Life as We Know It, Yogi Bear, and the first two Harry Potter movies.

The new films will cost between 30 and 40 Facebook credits (between $3 and $4) for a 48-hour rental period. During that time period, you'll have unlimited streaming access to the movie, meaning you can pause, rewind, watch on different computers, and watch numerous times. The movies are purchased and streamed within the Facebook page, meaning you won't have to leave the site in order to watch. You'll still be able to update your status and chat with friends. However, as the video player is Flash, you won't be able to watch your Facebook movies on your Apple devices.

Sponsor

yogi2.jpgThe move by Warner Bros to make its films available to stream via Facebook is an effort to expand the company's digital distribution efforts. The titles released today include a number of very recent movies. Yogi Bear was just released on DVD last week, and Life As We Know It came to DVD in early February.

But the real competition here might not be the DVD rental business: it's likely Netflix and its video streaming service. Certainly renting a movie for $3 to $4 a pop isn't as good a deal as Netflix's $8-per-month streaming subscription. Netflix has more titles, and that $8 gets you unlimited access to them.

However, none of the six titles that Warner Bros has released via Facebook are available to stream on Netflix. (You can get the DVDs in the mail, of course, with the exception of Yogi Bear. New titles have a 28-day waiting period before coming to the movie rental site).

Recent statistics point to Netflix as controlling a major share of the video streaming market - 61%. But despite its success with customers, the movie rental company has frequently butted heads with the movie studios.

Warner Bros has not indicated what its plans are for releasing more movies via Facebook, but it may be looking to sidestep that control that Netflix currently has over the online streaming market.

Google enters group messaging fray with Disco

Google has just quietly launched a group messaging offering, Disco, both as an online service and as an iPhone app. The new service will face competition from apps like GroupMe, Fast Society, Kik, and Beluga.

Disco lets you organize group messaging with your contacts in a unified interface. Almost exactly like competing services, Disco requires that you sign up with a cell phone number; after that, you can set up groups of friends and contacts to communicate with.

Disco’s interface is currently much more barebones than competing apps, supporting fewer features, but that may not necessarily be a bad thing: It adds to the speediness of the app. The web interface is also stark compared to those of some similar applications in their earlier releases.

Perhaps noteworthy is the fact that the app isn’t a traditional project by Google, but more of a stepchild through its acquisition of Slide, which it seems was autonomously given the reigns in the app’s construction and release. As a result of Slide’s autonomy, the app is currently only available on the iPhone (and not Google’s own mobile OS, Android), and supports full integration with Facebook to import your friends’ details (again — not with any of Google’s own services).

A mere peek at the list of group messaging applications already on the market points to the fact that there is a wave building in this space (earlier in the month, Facebook acquired contender Beluga for an undisclosed price). The looming question is whether that wave is pointed to shore, or simply headed to dissolution. Can Google’s Disco help carry it all the way?

Calling all mobile executives: This April 25-26, VentureBeat is hosting its inaugural VentureBeat Mobile Summit, where we’ll debate the five key business and policy challenges facing the mobile industry today. Participants will develop concrete, actionable solutions that will shape the future of the mobile industry. The invitation-only event, located at the scenic and relaxing Cavallo Point Resort in Sausalito, Calif., is limited to 180 mobile executives, investors and policymakers. We’ve pretty much finalized the invite list, but have a few spots left. Request an invitation.

How Effective Are QR Codes Anyway?

After years of being prevalent in places like Japan and South Korea, QR codes are finally showing up all over the place in the United States. In magazine ads, on public signs and even on vehicles, these two-dimensional barcodes are popping up more and more. But how effective are they?

About 72% of smart phone users say they would be likely to recall an advertisement that contained a QR code, according to a recent study by Baltimore advertising agency MGH. Of course, that's just people who own smart phones, which is only a fraction of the overall population (about 27% according to Comscore).

Sponsor

Recalling an ad with a QR code in it is one thing. Actually using the barcode is quite another. According to the survey, only 32% of smart phone users say they've used a QR code. Of those that have, they tend to use them to enter contests or to access extra information or other content.

It's worth remembering that QR codes only really start popping up in the United States within the last year or two. Perhaps the biggest obstacle to their widespread adoption is simply the fact that most people don't own smartphones. Of those that do, they may or may not know what a QR code is or how to use it.

For iPhone users, for example, activating them requires one to seek out and download an application for that explicit purpose (or use Google Goggles if they have the Google iPhone app).

Until QR code readers come built-in natively on a majority of smart phones and those devices are being carried around by a majority of consumers, the technology probably won't have an enormous impact. In the meantime, they appear to be headed for ubiquity. It's just a matter of time.
